Conceived in the wake of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, the International Law Commission’s Draft Articles on the Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters are a response to the increasing
frequency and severity of disasters and their damaging impacts.

"Everybody should be safe from disasters. Preventing them is possible, and is our collective responsibility."

- Kamal Kishore, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The Draft Articles aim to fill critical gaps in international law concerning disaster risk reduction and response, establish clearer legal obligations and enhance international cooperation and assistance in responding to disasters in support of affected States, while recognizing the centrality of humanitarian principles, the sovereignty of States and the primary role of the affected State.

Currently under consideration by the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, the Draft Articles could form the basis for a comprehensive legal framework to facilitate adequate and effective disaster risk reduction, to protect and meet the needs of persons affected by disasters and those at risk, with full respect for their rights.

"As disasters continue to grow in intensity and cost, it is important that we do not forget the human cost as well."

"Putting the people at the centre of our actions is not just a motto, but it is a core value of UNDRR and a driving principle of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction"

- Kamal Kishore

Aimed at raising awareness and enhancing common understanding on the Draft Articles among Member States, the exhibition will run from 15 to 26 July 2024 at the Delegates Entrance Hall of the UN Headquarters.
