On the sidelines of the seventh session of the Global Platform (GP2022), the UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States will organize the Seventh Arab Partnership Meeting for Disaster Risk reduction from 23 to 24 May 2022.
The (GP2022) will be organized and convened by the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) from 23 to 28 May 2022, in Bali, Indonesia, hosted by the Government of Indonesia. The event will be co-chaired by the Government of Indonesia and UNDRR.
The Arab Partnership Meeting for DRR and the Global Platform take place at a critical time, seven years from the adoption of the Sendai Framework and just over two years since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic when this global crisis has exposed how underlying vulnerabilities and inequities have catastrophic consequences for the most exposure across the world. Prevention and the risk reduction agenda are essential if we are to achieve a sustainable future for all.

Background:

Following the Sendai Framework guidance, UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States has organized several coordination meetings with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region. The most recent declaration, the Rabat Declaration in 2021, which was adopted along with several stakeholder groups’ voluntary action statements, came out as the result of a series of successful coordination meetings.
The aim of the biannual Arab Partnership for DRR meetings since 2017 has been to create a forum for technical and operational deliberation on the progress, challenges, and gaps in the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region. Another key objective is to facilitate regional discussion on innovative solutions toward climate risk management and DRR integration in the SDGs in the Arab region. These periodic discussions on the implementation challenges, gaps, and solutions intend to inform the deliberations of the Arab Regional Platform conferences.

This meeting,it is organized in alignment with the 2022 Global Platform and will provide a unique and timely opportunity to showcase the importance of international solidarity and cooperation, the Midterm Review (MTR) of the Sendai Framework stock take, identify emerging issues, uncover context shifts, and build coherence with other frameworks, to better address the systemic nature of risk and so realize regenerative and sustainable development. The MTR and political declaration adopted at this meeting can inform inter alia the SDGs Summit, the UN Secretary General’s Summit for the future and the recommendations for our common agenda, and COP28.as well as to discuss ways to tackle underlying risk drivers both locally and globally. Additionally, it will explore how to strengthen disaster risk governance and how to build stronger systems for managing all types of risks revealing the outcomes of the Midterm Review of the Sendai framework that started in 2022 and will conclude in 2023 at a high-level meeting of the General Assembly.

The 2022 Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction provides a unique opportunity in the run-up to COP27 to convene DRR and CCA experts to identify ways to scale up joint action to reduce disaster risks and build resilience in climate emergencies. Both the COP 26 and the COP 27 Presidencies are committed to ensuring a transparent and inclusive process in the lead-up to COP 27 to be convened in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt from 7 – 18 November 2022. Ahead of the COP-27, significant initiatives are being implemented in Egypt, particularly in Sharm El-Sheikh, in partnership with a wide range of stakeholders, including efforts exerted toward making the city a resilience hub in Egypt.
