The Executive Council of the African Union (AU) at the January 2011 Summit adopted the decision on the Report of the Second African Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) that was held on 16 April 2010 (EX.CL/Dec.607 (XVIII). The Executive Council took note of the Report, endorsed the recommendations contained therein and further endorsed the Extended Programme of Action (POA) for the implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction (2006-2015). In addition, the decision requested the AU Commission (AUC) to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of the Decision consistent with the recommendation of the Second Ministerial Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The AUC places top priority to the implementation of the POA.

To implement the Ministerial Declaration in accordance with decision of the AU Executive Council, the AU Commission is convening the inaugural meeting of the reconstituted African Working Group on Disaster Risk Reduction (AWGDRR). The Inaugural Meeting of AWGDRR will be held back to back with the formal Launching of the UNISDR Coordinated World Campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready” in Africa in collaboration with the UNISDR Regional Office for Africa. Nairobi, Kenya from 29 - 31 March 2011.

The overall aim of these two events is to institutionalize the Africa Working Group on DRR to accelerate the Implementation of the Africa Regional Strategy on DRR and its Programme of Action in line with the Hyogo Framework for Action (HFA). The objectives of these events amongst others are.

- To launch and the Reconstituted Africa Working Group on DRR.

- Formal launch of the Campaign “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready” in Africa

Yaoundé, Cameroon


- Prepare Africa’s position paper on DRR at the Global Platform 8 - 13 May 2011.
