The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) carries out annual training courses on 'Seismology and Seismic Hazard Assessment'

These crash courses are part of the educational and training program of the UNESCO, in the field of geosciences and disaster mitigation. They are a major German contribution of the United Nations International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR,1990-1999) and of respective follow-up programmes such as the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction ISDR.

The courses provide theoretical fundamentals and practical training in applied seismology, especially for geoscientists and technicians from developing countries. The courses are sponsored by Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany

During the training course education focuses on seismology, seismogram analysis, the precise analysis of earthquake locations and earthquake magnitudes, microzonation, and the calculation and interpretation of the regional earthquake hazard and risk.
