Pacific Regional Disaster Resilience Meeting
Background
2015 represents a turning point for the Pacific and Global community with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction being endorsed by the global community that will help shape the future of resilient development in the Pacific and its neighbors over the next 10 to 15 years. An increase in the number of natural hazards and their intensity in the Pacific caused by the effects of climate change have increased the vulnerability of Pacific Island Countries and Territories (PICTS). The Pacific community recognizes that the sustainability of their development is closely linked to their ability to be resilient to the effects of these natural hazards and that the shift in mindset away from just response to disasters to one of resilience to disasters is crucial to ensuring a safer and more prosperous region - "One Pacific for a Resilient Future".
The regional Pacific Platforms for Disaster Risk Management have been held each year since 2009. Until the new architecture of the Pacific Resilient Partnership (PRP) meetings is decided, it is important to take advantage of the successful adoption of new strategies in the region and world conferences in 2015 and bring the Pacific community together to move forward and understand what these new strategies mean for the region and how partners can work together to implement them.
The meeting aims to discuss what these strategies mean for the Pacific, regionally, nationally and locally. By bringing stakeholders together for disaster risk reduction, the conference will identify the current status including good practices and gaps in the region.
Purpose:
To inform national and regional stakeholders of the new global strategy the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction; identify actions for the implementation of the Framework in the region and synergies with other relevant strategies such as the SDGs to increase the region's resilience over the next decade.
Proposed outputs:
Outcome statement:
Key outcomes will be consolidated into an Outcome Statement of the meeting, which will be discussed and endorsed in plenary at the closing session of the meeting and will outline key steps forward. The outcome statement will potentially act as a guide and driving force to assist in planning for and implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR in the Pacific region with key actions and next steps specifically drawing linkages to existing work and other strategies such as the SDGs in order to reduce burden on countries and ensure effective use of existing resources.
Meeting report:
A more detailed summary of proceedings and messages will be included in a Meeting Report, which will be distributed electronically to participants.
Proposed outcomes:
The outcome statement will potentially act as a guide and driving force to assist in implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR in the Pacific region with key actions and next steps specifically drawing linkages to existing work and other strategies such as the SDGs in order to reduce burden on countries and ensure effective use of existing resources.
