Regional Forum Related to the Design of the Regional Multi-Hazard Early Warning System
UNISDR and WMO started in May 2012 the joint implementation of the project 'Building resilience to disasters in the Western Balkans and Turkey'. The project is supported by the European Commission DG Enlargement through the Instrument for Pre-Accession (IPA). The beneficiaries are Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244) and Turkey. The project will end in October 2014. The overall objective of the Action is to strengthen the resilience of the IPA beneficiaries to disasters.
As a part of the project activities, WMO established a Design Team consisting of representatives of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and DRR agencies of the beneficiaries as well as international experts for design of the regional Multi-Hazard Early Warning System (MHEWS). The aim of the work of the Design Team is to develop a design for regional MHEWS through regional collaboration providing technological and institutional solutions for the system based on the harmonized national Early Warning Systems. The design of the regional Multi-Hazard Early Warning System will be presented, discussed and promoted in the Regional Forum organized in connection to the Final Steering Committee meeting of the project.
