About
As part of the 2024 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), with the support of the MCR2030 initiative, and the Youth Network for Disaster Risk Reduction – Americas and the Caribbean, invite you to participate in the Risk Management Mapathon – Amazon Edition. This special event will take place on October 8 and 10, 2024, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. (Panama time) and is open to participants across the region.
The mapathon aims to strengthen collaborative mapping capacities in vulnerable areas of the Colombian Amazon, using open mapping tools such as OpenStreetMap (OSM) and HOT’s Tasking Manager. This edition will focus on generating accurate, up-to-date data to support risk management in local Amazonian communities, thus contributing to their resilience against disasters.
What can you expect?
October 8: Introduction to OpenStreetMap and a hands-on mapping session, designed for both new users and those with experience. Ivon Rodriguez, Environmental Engineer and Official of the Departmental Government of Amazonas, Colombia, will deliver the opening remarks. The training will be led by digital mapping experts.
October 10: A full collaborative mapping session where participants will apply the skills acquired to priority areas in the Colombian Amazon, mapping in real time and contributing crucial information for risk and disaster management.
This event is a unique opportunity to learn about participatory mapping, collaborate with a committed global community, and contribute vital data that can help save lives. Don’t miss this chance to be part of a humanitarian mapping network and contribute to the resilience of the Amazon region!
