Training on Disaster Resilience for Cities - Busan
Background
Busan Metropolitan City, South Korea's second largest city after Seoul, with a population of approximately 3.9 million is located on the Southeastern tip of the Korean Peninsula and is administratively divided into 16 local governments. It is located on the coast and borders low mountains on the north and west, and the seas on the south and east. The Nakdong River, South Korea's longest river, is located on the west side of the city, and Geumjeongsan, the highest mountain in the city, on the north.
The major risks facing the city varies from nuclear emergencies due to a nuclear power plant located in its neighboring city, Ulsan Metropolitan City to some natural hazards like typhoons, floods, landslides, heavy snows, and functional interruptions of city's critical infrastructures relating to potential cascading effects of such natural hazards.
