UNDRR ROAMC - WTAD Documentary Tsunami Ladies

Tsunamis are quite unusual events, but they are also extremely deadly. In the last 100 years, 58 of them have claimed more than 260,000 lives. An average of 4,600 deaths each time they occur, which exceeds any other disaster caused by natural hazards.

The terrible impact of tsunamis is diminished by focusing on reducing vulnerabilities and exposures and implementing disaster risk reduction policies and key strategies. This requires improved governance through a significant increase in countries with national and local disaster risk reduction strategies, as established by the target E of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.

On November 5, 2020, the documentary Tsunami Ladies, produced by Emiliano Rodriguez Nuesch and Victor Orellana, will be presented. This documentary focuses on the role of women in the face of the impact of the tsunamis and their leadership in the process of rebuilding communities, expressed through their knowledge of seafood and cooking.  

Tsunami Ladies celebrates the women of Chile and Japan who overcame the tsunamis, and who from their love of cooking led the reconstruction of their villages. Six women from Chile and Japan meet to tell each other their stories and exchange recipes," says Emiliano Rodriguez Nuesch.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to remember the existence of multiple and latent threats, such as tsunamis, which could impact the region at any time and deepen the current crisis.
