Tashkent commits to assess resilience to disaster with UNDRR and EU support

The city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and UNDRR have embarked on a partnership to assess the resilience of the capital city and to develop a comprehensive plan of action to reduce risk.

Mr. B. Rakhmanqulov, Deputy Mayor of Tashkent, the largest city in Central Asia, stated that the development and rapid growth of Tashkent should take into account all existing and future risks, specifically related to the factor of climate change. The Deputy Mayor stressed that the assessment and development of the city’s resilience plan will be helpful in ensuring that investment in the city will follow its development.

"This is a key step toward building disaster resilience in Tashkent.  There is a clear commitment from city officials to work with UNDRR to understand what risks they face and to take action to reduce them."  said Abhilash Panda, Deputy Chief of UNDRR’s Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.

In the next two years, UNDRR, with the support of European Commission, aims to support capital cities from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan in developing their DRR and Resilience plans.
