Join the Santiago network
As part of the ongoing effort to operationalise the Santiago network, ‘organizations, bodies, networks and experts’ (OBNE) are invited to submit expressions of interest to join the network. OBNEs play a critical role in delivering technical assistance to developing countries for averting, minimizing and addressing climate-related loss and damage. Those interested are requested to follow the instructions published by the network’s secretariat
Lessons from Hurricane Beryl
In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, the heads of UNDRR, the World Meteorological Organization, and the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency published a joint op-ed titled ‘Hurricanes are inevitable, but disasters are not.’ The piece highlighted the success of early warning systems in reducing disaster deaths and called for continued support from the international community to help Small Island Developing States enhance their resilience.
Launch of GAR Special Report
Register for the virtual launch event for the GAR Special Report 2024 on 18 September 2024, at 15:00 Geneva time. Under the title, “Disasters Forensics: Learning from the past for a more resilient future,” the report examines ten recent disasters to understand the unique footprints - or disaster DNA - of these events. The report also offers policy options and evidence-based recommendations for corrective actions and prospective approaches to integrate disaster risk reduction into development processes.
Are You Ready? campaign
Partners, educators and the general public are invited to register for a webinar on 5 September to learn more about UNDRR’s upcoming ‘Are You Ready?’ campaign, which will launch on 13 October on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and continue into 2025. The campaign aims to promote the Comprehensive School Safety Framework and to highlight ways that children and youth can be empowered to build disaster resilience, including through games.
Regional strategies for climate resilience in Latin America
Ahead of the UN Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) that will be hosted by the Colombian city of Cali, a regional workshop highlighted the importance of integrating climate and disaster risk management to build resilience. The workshop brought together more than 50 experts and representatives from across Latin America and was organised by UNDRR, the Government of Columbia, the German Development Cooperation (GIZ), UNDP, and the Municipality of Santiago de Cali.
