The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) stands in solidarity with the people of Morocco in the wake of the earthquake that struck the country on Friday.

“I am heartbroken to learn of the growing number of victims from this terrible disaster. My condolences to the families that lost loved ones and I wish those who have been injured full and quick recoveries,” said Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Head of the UNDRR.

Of all natural hazards, earthquakes cause the deadliest disasters, accounting for 58% of total disaster deaths between 2000-2019. Like all disasters, the impacts are exacerbated by other risk factors, such as inequality and poverty.

“This is a time for solidarity, for garnering immediate assistance to those affected, and for grieving alongside those who have lost loved ones and friends,” said Ms. Mizutori. “Support should extend to helping communities build back better once the response phase is over. UNDRR stands ready to assist.”
