A technical meeting in Bonn supports Sendai Framework implementation

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction is launching an online platform which allows partners to log their voluntary commitments towanrds implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Japan hosted the 2nd World Tsunami Museum Conference which attracted 156 participants from 17 countries to help raise awareness of tsunami risk.

The Asia Pacific region needs to accelerate progress on increasing the number of national and local disaster risk reduction strategies if they are to reach the first target of the Sendai Framework by 2020. This was a key conclusion of a two-day workshop in Bangkok, Thailand, convened by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction.

UNISDR head, Mami Mizutori, has welcomed the Paris Agreement Work Programme produced at the COP24 in Katowice, Poland, and hopes it will encourage greater alignment between national action plans on climate change and national strategies for disaster risk reduction.

Delegates at the ISDR-Asia Partnership Forum, a two-day gathering of 100 representatives from 20 governments, intergovernmental organizations, stakeholder groups, the United Nations and international organizations, organized by UNISDR Asia Pacific Office, agree that countries in the region need to accelerate action to reduce disaster risks and achieve the goals of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

There is no economic loss data for 63 percent of the disasters recorded over the last 20 years, and low-income countries are lacking even more at 87 percent. Capturing loss data will help factor risk information into infrastructure investment decisions, and it will also drive planning at the national and local level to improve risk reduction strategies.
