In the face of climate change and growing urbanization, Thailand is taking key steps to strengthen its resilience, including through a better understanding of disaster-related economic losses. The collection of statistics on losses and damages, especially on key sectors such as agriculture, housing, infrastructure, and cultural heritage, can guide risk reduction efforts to safeguard these sectors.

The head of UNDRR, Mami Mizutori, today announced a new urban resilience programme for Central Asia supported by the Euroopean Commission at a DRR Conference in Dushanbe,Tajikistan

As the Government of Lao PDR continues its recovery from the floods of 2018, it is seeking to lessen the risk of future disasters. To accomplish this, the Lao Government and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction jointly organized a national workshop that brought together development partners and government agencies to lay the foundation for the country’s first national disaster risk reduction strategy.

Question: What are the greatest challenges facing your city? In the past we have built immovable pillars for policy and normative issues by topic so it is a challenge to empower actors in different institutions. We have regional and global frameworks but we need to translate these to the city level and we need to find ways to finance them.

A new face of Egypt is rising, and plenty of risk-informed projects are emerging. As part of “The Making Cities Resilient Initiative," Ismailia received assistance in understanding and accelerating DRR strategies thanks to training workshops and technical support.

In this interview, Dr. Sherif, Nouakchott's Focal Point, reveals that the Making Cities Resilient initiative has helped his city improve engagement with various actors involved in the resilience process, and has improved coordination between them.

Thanks to the Making Cities Resilient and Sustainable Initiative, Nablus, Palestine, is working on boosting its resilience capability, engaging different stakeholders such as the private sector, business community and academic institutions.

In this interview, Veladio Erazo Masgo, Deputy Manager of Disaster Risk of San Juan de Lurigancho, reveals that the "Making Cities Resilient" initiative has provided a tool that guides urban growth in his city. The effort will hopefully help overcome issues in local authority engagement and increasing the understanding of DRR's importance.

Thanks to the Making Cities Resilient Initiative, Khartoum has become more aware of its gaps regarding disaster risk management, and is addressing them with various projects.
