The latest in city-to-city exchanges on resilience for Arab municipalities are being hosted this week by Potenza, Italy.

Thanks to the ‘Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient’ initiative, Yaoundé Six, Cameroon, has developed a disaster risk reduction action plan to enhance living conditions in its informal settlements.

UNDRR is supporting the Member States of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) maintain and protect their development gains by strengthening their ability to develop, implement and monitor coherent disaster risk reduction strategies.

Ulaanbaatar joined the ‘Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient’ initiative, under which it developed a DRR plan that includes increased investments in reconstructing, retrofitting and assessing the safety of buildings. The plan also entails identifying safety zones and protecting livestock.

Thanks to the ‘Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient’ initiative, a new DRR action plan was developed in La Isla to establish a clear picture of zoning in the city, which helps regulate where people can build and where to invest in drainage infrastructure.

Jamaica will host the region’s highest forum for reviewing progress on reducing disaster losses in Latin America and the Caribbean in July 2020 as the year’s Atlantic Hurricane Season gets underway.

While heatwaves and hot weather do not cause significant damage to the landscape similar to cyclones and earthquakes, the impacts of heatwaves on health, economic productivity, and the environment can nonetheless be serious and costly.

Under the ‘Making Cities Sustainable and Resilient’ initiative in Cape Verde, a wide cross-section of organizations came together to rank Praia’s levels of disaster resilience. The city is also now developing its first DRR plan.

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats (Hybrid CoE) and the Ministry of the Interior for Finland have joined together to develop a new stress test tool that will help countries understand and improve their ability to reduce risk of hybrid threats and cascading disaster scenarios.
