Farmers in northwestern Cameroon are deploying traditional knowledge to boost the survival of their crops, thereby curbing the risk of disasters posed by increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

The Pacific Region has a wealth of traditional knowledge for disaster risk reduction. It is rarely advertised or documented, but passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation. One striking example came to light after one of the worst cyclones this year.

GENEVA, September 21, 2015 - The head of UNISDR, Margareta Wahlström, praised Mexico for its commitment to reducing disaster losses and avoiding the creation of new risk, during talks with the government and in a speech to mark the 30th anniversary of the deadly 1985 earthquake on Saturday.
