Across the ACS region, CEPREDENAC, CDEMA and UNDRR have been working to bolster communication and knowledge-sharing for MHEWS, which has deepened regional cooperation.

“Measuring and Planning for Climate Change” is a regional initiative of Mercociudades, co-financed by the Union of Ibero-American Capital Cities (UCCI) and Mercociudades, with technical support from ICLEI and UNDRR – under the MCR2030 initiative.

The Caribbean private sector has also invested in these disaster risk reduction (DRR) efforts. During and after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria in 2017, businesses in the region grew more conscious of the risks posed by multiple hazards.

The 11 participating municipalities received a certification that recognises the completion of Stage A and marks the beginning of Stage B, which opens the process of developing a Resilience Plan for the year 2024.

Trust is critical to effective risk communication. Where communities feel they are not receiving or able to understand or trust the warnings being disseminated, they are less likely to take action in the face of a hazard.

The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) has been working to support various organizations across the Caribbean to incorporate multiple hazards into their understanding of EWS.

The municipality partnered with UNDRR and ICLEI, co-leaders of the MCR2030 initiative in the Americas and Caribbean, to accompany and support the process.

The application of the tool was conducted through a workshop facilitated by UNDRR under the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) initiative.

The objective of the Programme is to build capacity in both local governments for integrated risk management and disaster resilience action planning.

The competition aimed to demonstrate that data is not just for experts and scientists but should be available for local communities on the front line of disasters to understand and act accordingly.
