Demonstrating the role of ecosystems-based management for disaster disk reduction
This study seeks to develop a more robust understanding of ecosystems-based approaches to disaster risk reduction (DRR) and contribute to the growing literature on this subject. The study targets primarily policymakers who are responsible for setting development priorities and the disaster risk reduction community, which is continually searching for effective and viable solutions to achieve substantial reductions in disaster losses.
The document formulates recommendations on how to further improve and address gaps in implementing ecosystem-based DRR, including:
- bridging knowledge gaps;
- developing better guidelines and practical tools;
- developing and enhancing institutional capacities for ecosystem-based DRR in vulnerable countries;
- developing effective communication strategies that target policymakers and decision makers;
- fostering science-practitioner dialogue.
This document is a contributing paper for the 2011 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction.
