This monthly newsletter highlights UNISDR activities around the world. This issue reports on: (i) the first RISK Award ceremony at the 4th International Disaster and Risk Conference, Davos 2012; (ii) the devastating floods that hit hard the Philippines); (iii) the request to SRSG for Disaster Risk Reduction Margareta Wahlström made by Japanese school children asking to be heard on Post-HFA; (iv) the severe drought in Mexico that is affecting mostly indigenous people from several communities; (v) the issues of migration triggered by natural hazards (e.g. climate change); (vi) Filipino DRR ad campaign; (vii) Affrica’s new step towards disaster insurance; (viii) a major address by UNISDR Chief Margareta Wahlström to the 4th International Disaster and Risk Conference in Davos stressing out the gap between knowledge and action; (ix) a new study by UNICEF and UNESCO on the implementation of DRR into school curricula; (x) UNDP’s intention to double its support for DRR; and (xi) the launch of the Resilient Cities Award to recognize excellence in land use planning and design and other activities that help protect communities from the impacts of natural hazards.
