Selection of local case studies with fully probabilistic hazard and risk assessments
This background paper presents a selection of fully probabilistic hazard and risk assessments conducted at local (city) level in Colombia where the same methodology and model used for the GAR13 and GAR15 have been followed; that is, representing hazard through a set of stochastic scenarios and quantifying physical vulnerability by means of probabilistic vulnerability functions.
The paper concludes that detailed approaches are the solution when the question to be answered requires that resolution. In addition, modification in the level of resolution has implications in how hazard, exposure and even vulnerability are modelled. The assessments presented allow the developing of activities and policies in disaster risk reduction and may range from retrofitting existing buildings up to land use planning.
This document is a background document for the 2015 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction.
