Towards practical and pragmatic natural disaster reduction by the year 2000: a policy document based upon observations and lessons learned during 1990-1996

This document, prepared for the 8th meeting of the IDNDR Scientific and Technical Committee (STC), held in Paris in January 1997, presents IDNDR’s observations and lessons learned in disaster risk reduction (DRR) at international, regional, national, local and community levels. It discusses the role of scientific institutions, the implementation strategies, the gaps between DRR and development and the need for increased collaboration.

The document analyses the approach for consolidating research and applications, and sets out priority areas for action on DRR for the period 1997-2000.
