Transformative development and disaster risk management (Publication No. 4)
Assessment of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (AIRDR) Publication No. 4This report explores what constitutes transformative disaster risk management and explains the relationship between disaster risk management and development. In this context, special attention is paid to how disaster risk management and development have evolved over the past years and where the research gaps are in our present knowledge.
The report elaborates on five key questions: i) how does transformation relate conceptually to research on vulnerability and resilience; ii) what areas of disaster risk reduction have the potential to transform development; iii) do incremental steps of improved disaster risk management lead to transformed policy and practice; iv) what concrete development benefits of transformative disaster risk management and v) how can progress in disaster risk reduction and development be measured.
The report was commissioned by UNISDR to inform the 2015 Global Assessment Report on Disaster Risk Reduction, section on the Future of Disaster Risk Management. It builds on work conducted for the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) Assessment of Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR AIRDR Publication No. 1)
