Background:

Following the Sendai Framework guidance, UNDRR Regional Office for the Arab States has organized several coordination meetings with the aim of accelerating the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region. The most recent declaration, the Tunis Declaration in 2018, which was adopted along with several stakeholder groups’ voluntary action statements, came out as the result of a series of successful coordination meetings.

The aim of the bi-annual Arab Partnership for DRR meetings since 2017 has been to create a forum for technical and operational deliberation on the progress, challenges, and gaps in the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region. Another key objective is to facilitate regional discussion on innovative solutions towards climate risk management and DRR integration in the SDGs in the Arab region. These periodic discussions on the implementation challenges, gaps, and solutions intend to inform the deliberations of the Arab Regional Platform conferences.

For this meeting, the Sendai Focal points of all Arab countries have been invited to review the progress made in the implementation of the Prioritized Action Plan 2018-2020 of the Arab Strategy for DRR 2030 since the last Arab Partnership Meeting. The meeting will also focus on stakeholder’s engagement and progress in implementing their voluntary commitments and action plans made during the Africa-Arab Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in Tunis.

The key objectives of the Fifth Arab Partnership Meeting for DRR will be to:

  1. Take stock of progress, challenges, and opportunities in the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the Arab Region;
  2. Follow up on the progress achieved by stakeholder groups in implementing the Voluntary Action Statements and action plans;
  3. Discuss the preparations for the 5th Arab Regional Platform on DRR

In adherence to the COVID-19 safety measurements, while proceeding with our crucial collaborations with UNDRR Sendai Focal Points, stakeholder groups, UN and International agencies, the Fifth Arab Partnership Meeting for Disaster Risk Reduction will be held online in the month of November 2020.

The meeting will be conducted virtually for 5 days while each day will be dedicated to one segment the final day will include all participants. The first day is targeted for the National Sendai Focal Points and government representatives to update on their progress in implementing the Prioritized Action Plan (2018-2020) for the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction in their respective countries and agree on an addendum to the Arab Strategy for Disaster Risk Reduction on Biological Hazards. The second day is dedicated to the seven (7) identified voluntary stakeholder group members to update on their progress in implementing their voluntary action statements and action plans and identify the challenges and opportunities and recommendations to strengthen stakeholders’ engagement. The third day is targeting the UN regional offices and International Organizations to share updates on supporting the region in implementing disaster risk reduction. The fourth day is dedicated to the commemoration of World Tsunami Awareness and the Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) Regional Launch. The fifth day is dedicated to all participants to present outcomes and recommendations of previous days and sessions, introduce new initiatives, and discuss the next partnership meeting and preparations for the 5th Arab Platform for DRR.

The fourth and fifth days of the Arab Partnership meeting will be open for the public to register and attend.
