The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the systemic nature of disasters. It has also demonstrated the importance of having a coordinated approach across all levels of government and sectors. It has shown that we must have a coordinated approach to reduce risk. Building resilience of local, regional, and national governments through robust risk governance structures, supported equitably, technically, and financially, are critical steps to ensure that disaster impacts are mitigated.

The session Lessons learnt for a resilient recovery and building the future better is co-organized by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) and the European Committee of the Regions’ Commission for Natural Resources (NAT). It will enable exchange on lessons learnt and take stock of the measures taken so far in building up the EU’s resilience for a better future. It will gather representatives from different levels of government to exchange on their lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic and will bring in the voice of the youth whose future is being determined by the choices and investments made now. Furthermore, its timing marks the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (13 October), and the theme for 2021 is focused on international cooperation, which has played a central role in recovery efforts.

The session will take place virtually as part of the European Week of Regions and Cities and the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, on 13 October 2021 from 16:30 to 18:00 CET.
