Closing remarks by SRSG Mizutori: 3rd Multi-hazard Early Warning Conference

Thank you, Madam Deputy Secretary-General for your inspiring words and for your engagement in this conference. I also thank our co-organizers and our host, the Government of Indonesia.

I am encouraged to see the great diversity of stakeholders who participated in the conference,  including government agencies, academia, NGOs and the private sector, to name a few.  The discussions of the past two days have been enriched by your individual experience and points of view.

The outcomes of these exchanges will help us accelerate our efforts around people-centred early warning and early action, thereby accelerating the implementation of Target G of the Sendai Framework; namely, to enhance access to Multi-hazard Early Warning Systems.

As we move into the next phase of the Global Platform, the coming three days will allow us to continue the discussions on early warning systems and build on them with the larger disaster risk reduction community.

This includes taking part in the stock taking exercise on the implementation of target G, and your contributions will help define the global priorities for Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems.

In concluding, I would like to emphasise that UNDRR remains committed to advancing the outcomes of this 3rd Multi-hazard Early Warning Conference in collaboration with partners. We will do this within the framework of the joint UNDRR-WMO Centre of Excellence for Climate and Disaster Resilience, the Risk-informed Early Action Partnership, the CREWS initiative for Climate Risk and Early Warning Systems, and many other global and regional partnerships.

As the experts in this field, allow me to urge you to continue supporting countries to strengthen their early warning systems, and to ensure they are multi-hazard, end-to-end, and people-centred.   Only by doing this will we stop the spiral of disaster destruction and create safer, more resilient communities.

Finally, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the participants, organisers and the Government of Indonesia for making the 3rd Multi-hazard Early Warning Conference a success.
