Regional pacific celebration of international day for disaster reduction 2011

The 2011 Pacific Regional International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) event was celebrated in Suva, Fiji, as a joint initiative of the United Nations, SPC/SOPAC, the Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF), Pacific Conference of Churches and other regional and national stakeholders and partners who are working in the fields of disaster risk reduction, climate change, children and youth in the Pacific.
In the Pacific, IDDR was celebrated jointly with the World Habitat Day 2011, observed globally on October 3rd, with a related theme on Cities and Climate Change.
The half day event involved:
1. Messages on IDDR and World Habitat Day from the UN, local government and children/youth
2. Videos related to children/youth involvement in DRR and climate change
3. Dance performance by primary school children on DRR and tsunamis
4. Launch of a joint UNDP/UNISDR publication on institutional and policy analysis of DRR and CCA in the Pacific Island Countries
Suva, Nausori and Rakiraki from Fiji received their Certificates of Commitment to Disaster Resilience by the UNISDR Sub-Regional Office for joining the campaign on IDDR.
