Reflecting on the success of Sudan's disaster risk management workshop
3-5 September 2024, Sudan – In a significant stride towards enhancing disaster risk management, the UNDRR Regional Office for Arab States Sudan concluded a three-day workshop focused on strengthening national capacities for compiling and analyzing disaster-related statistics. Held in line with the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, the workshop aimed to promote a shift from merely managing disasters to effectively managing risk, emphasizing resilience-building as a core component of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The workshop addressed the critical need for disaggregated data on disaster losses, acknowledging that while reported disasters continue to rise due to improved reporting and increased vulnerabilities, major gaps remain in data collection and analysis at the national level. These gaps often arise because data is primarily gathered for compensation purposes rather than to inform science-policy interfaces.
“Significant challenges remain, particularly the gaps in disaster-related data collection and collation at the national level, with developing countries like Sudan face unique difficulties,” said Nora Achkar, Chief of UNDRR ROAS in her opening remarks. “For this reason, we have organized this workshop aiming to build national capacities for compiling disaster-related statistics, hence enhance disaster management and promote risk-informed sustainable development,” she added.
The workshop aimed to deepen the understanding of the importance of detailed disaster loss data, train participants in using advanced databases and tracking systems, and enhance national monitoring and reporting capabilities aligned with the Sendai Framework and the Sustainable Development Goals.
A key highlight of the workshop was the introduction of the "DesInventar-Sendai" software, a user-friendly and accessible tool and comprehensive database designed to collect systematic data on disaster-related losses and damages. This software simplifies the process for countries like Sudan to collect, compile, and analyze disaster-related data. Participants received a hands-on training on this tool and the new disaster tracking system, gaining valuable insights into its methodology and application for national systems.
The workshop also explored innovative data tools and platforms aimed at enhancing risk information and communication. By showcasing best practices and experiences from experts, the workshop provided a platform for valuable knowledge exchange, fostering collaboration among organizations involved in disaster risk reduction and humanitarian response in Sudan.
With successful sessions on measuring disaster risk, economic losses, and risk reduction expenditures, the workshop marked a significant step forward in Sudan's disaster risk management efforts. By equipping officials from national statistical offices, line ministries, and disaster management agencies with essential skills and tools, the workshop aimed to build a solid foundation for future disaster risk management and sustainable development initiatives.
