About
A curtain-raiser event to Bonn Technical Forum 2024 Beyond economic losses: Towards a holistic approach on tracking losses and damages
Non-economic losses (NEL) represent significant but often overlooked aspects of disaster and climate change impacts, affecting people, cultural heritage, and ecosystems. As disasters grow in frequency and intensity, it is essential to account for NELs, especially in the context of climate-induced events.
Existing literature offers various frameworks for understanding NELs, providing a foundation to explore their impact on people and the environment, and addressing their complexity and context-specific nature. Some literature proposes distinguishing among material and non-material losses, while other frameworks categorizes NELs into individual, societal, and environmental clusters, encouraging stakeholder input.
As a curtain-raiser event ahead of the 2024 Bonn Technical Forum, this webinar will engage participants in discussing approaches to understanding and categorizing NELs, exploring typologies, value expressions, and identifying gaps. It will build on the UNDRR's literature review on the subject and lay the groundwork for a policy-oriented engagement focusing on integrating NELs into the forthcoming Disaster Tracking System (DTS) currently under development by UNDRR and partners.
