2024 Europe and Central Asia Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction Concludes with Key Outcomes for a Resilient Future
The 2024 Europe and Central Asia Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction concluded on Friday in Budva, Montenegro, marking a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to disaster resilience. The event gathered over 700 participants, including ministers, civil protection leaders, and key stakeholders from 55 UN Member States, underscoring the urgency and collective responsibility to strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts.
This year's Regional Platform was the largest multi-stakeholder gathering to date dedicated to the implementation of the Sendai Framework in the region. It served as a unique forum for diverse voices, including government officials, youth, persons with disabilities, gender rights advocates, and the private sector, to collaborate and contribute to shaping an inclusive and resilient future in disaster risk reduction.
The event produced three key outcomes that will guide future actions on disaster risk reduction in the region:
- Political Declaration: A commitment emerging from the Ministerial Roundtable, reaffirming the political will of participating Member States to implement DRR policies and safeguard communities against future risks.
- Call for Action from the Government of Montenegro on Earthquake Risk: Presented by the Prime Minister of Montenegro, H.E. Milojko Spajić, during the Opening Ceremony, this call urges urgent action to address the region's vulnerability to earthquake risk and enhance preparedness strategies.
- Call to Action on Children and Youth: Emerging from "The Road to Resilience for Europe and Central Asia’s Children and Youth Forum," this call emphasizes the crucial role of young people in disaster risk reduction and their call for greater inclusion in decision-making processes. The youth-led statement was delivered by two youth representatives during the Ministerial Roundtable.
As the region faces an evolving complex landscape of disaster risks, the outcomes of this platform mark a collective step forward in advancing resilience and preparedness across Europe and Central Asia.
