About

Learn about life-saving measures and creative reconstruction in Kumamoto, which has experienced large-scale natural hazards such as earthquakes and torrential rains.

The resolution to designate November 5 as World Tsunami Awareness Day was proposed by Japan and adopted by consensus at the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 2015.

Since 2016, the High School Students Summit has been held in Kochi Prefecture, Okinawa Prefecture, Wakayama Prefecture, Hokkaido and Niigata Prefecture respectively. Each summit served as a platform for high school students around the globe to learn about and discuss the threat of tsunamis and life-saving measures that can be taken in the event of a tsunami, as well as to deepen mutual understanding through interaction and the exchange of idea.

Kumamoto has recently experienced large-scale natural hazards, such as the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes and The Heavy Rain Event on July 2020. The High School Student Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day 2024 in Kumamoto will be held with the aim of mitigating the damage caused by natural hazards such as earthquakes and tsunamis, developing future leaders who will take action toward national resilience, and further deepening the ties between countries all over the world.
