Uruguay and the UNDRR - Regional Office for the Americas and the Caribbean are pleased to announce that the VIII Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas and the Caribbean will be held from February 28 to March 2 in Uruguay.

Local governments play an essential role in disaster risk reduction and building resilience. At UNDRR’s 2022 Global Platform, the Local Leaders Forum opened a productive discussion on important issues around disaster resilience at city and district level.

The theme for today’s Forum - Towards Inclusive, Safe, Resilient & Sustainable Cities – is more important than ever. We are living in an era of triple and overlapping crises.

The aim of today’s session is to extrapolate further insight into how the private sector and ARISE can contribute to accelerating DRR and how this engagement can be done in an all-of-society manner.

We are meeting at a critical juncture for the Sustainable Development Goals and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. Both of these landmark frameworks are approaching the midpoint of their implementation at a time of significant setbacks.

Non-governmental stakeholder groups, including the private sector and scientific organizations, have increased their commitments to DRR since 2019, according to a new report released by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

An all-of-society approach to reducing risk and building resilience is one of the Sendai Framework’s guiding principles. It calls for “inclusive, accessible and non-discriminatory participation”, and pays attention to those disproportionately affected.

This Conference is an excellent opportunity to take stock and promote the scaling up Target G of the Sendai Framework, which calls on us to substantially increase the availability of and access to Multi-hazard Early Warning Systems.
