The focus of this year’s IDDRR on 13 October is on a topic which has been pushed to the fore by the debates raging around the faltering response to planetary emergencies such as the COVID-19 pandemic an, the climate emergency.

13 October 2021 – The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, Regional Office for Arab States, organized a commemoration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction this year by organizing a special session at the UN Hub at Expo 2020

The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction today issues a new report “International Cooperation in Disaster Risk Reduction” which highlights low levels of investments in disaster prevention and disaster risk reduction for the world’s most vulnerable countries.

The World Meteorological Organization and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction are marking 13 October, International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, with the announcement of the creation of a Centre of Excellence for Climate and Disaster Resilience.

The need for a multi-hazard approach is one of the key lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic, and one that UNDRR advocates for all to follow as an important building block to save lives and to reduce the percentage of GDP that countries lose to disasters.

This new Centre of Excellence will concentrate minds on what extreme weather and other natural hazards means for daily life on planet Earth for the foreseeable future and spur efforts to adapt and cope with that reality.

The inaugural WIN DRR Leadership Awards have been granted to Ms. Vasiti Soko, Director of the National Disaster Management Office in Fiji, and Dr. Nuraini Rahma Hanifa, an earthquake scientist who founded U-INSPIRE Alliance

The contest brought together schoolchildren from Dushanbe, interested in drawing and disaster risk reduction in the Alisher Navoi Park of Culture and Recreation.

This framework establishes a long-term vision for adaptation, which recognises the need for a systemic approach and acknowledges the interdependency between a stable climate and the maintenance of ecosystem services.

The $5.5 million project aims to reduce the impacts of disasters caused by hazards by increasing the utilization of early warning and risk information in Cambodia and Lao PDR.
