The East African Community (EAC) is the regional intergovernmental organisation of the Republics of Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania and Republic of Uganda based in Arusha, Tanzania.
The regional economic bloc was established in November 1999 by the Treaty for Establishment of the East African Community that entered into force on 7 July 2000 following its ratification by the original three Partner States of Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Burundi acceded to the EAC Treaty on 18 June 2007 and became full Members of the Community with effect from 1 July 2007.
The objective of the EAC is to develop policies and programmes aimed at widening and deepening economic, social and cultural, political, research and technology, defence, security and legal and judicial affairs for mutual benefits of the Partner States.EAC’s vision is a prosperous, competitive, secure, stable and politically united East Africa; and its mission is to widen and deepen economic, political, social and culture integration in order to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, trade and investments.
EAC is implementating the EAC Protocol of Environment and Natural Resources Management, whose objective is to promote sustainable growth and development of the EAC Partner States through sustainable land use and management of the environment and natural resources through mitigation, prevention and management of activities and processes that are detrimental to the communities, natural and physical environment including natural disasters and climate change.
The Sendai Framework Voluntary Commitments (SFVC) online platform allows stakeholders to inform the public about their work on DRR. The SFVC online platform is a useful toolto know who is doing what and where for the implementation of the Sendai Framework, which could foster potential collaboration among stakeholders. All stakeholders (private sector, civil society organizations, academia, media, local governments, etc.) working on DRR can submit their commitments and report on their progress and deliverables.
